Workshop on “Kurds in the Middle East and Their Impacts on the Future of the Region”

ORSAM and Russian Research Center RISI jointly held a workshop, entitled “Kurds in the Middle East and Their Impacts on the Future of the Region”. Niyazi Güney, Advisory Board member at ORSAM and Vice Chairman of Prens Group, and RISI deputy Director Igor Prokofyev delivered the opening speech of the workshop held on October 28, 2013. In the first session of the workshop, Prof. Dr. Doğu Ergil, who is a faculty member at Fatih University and writes columns for Bugün and Today's Zaman, delivered a speech on Kurds in the Middle East in a general framework. While Dr. Anna Glazova who is the deputy director of the Department of Studies on Asia and Middle East at RISI touched on “Kurds within the framework of Arab Revolutions”; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ilyas Kamalov who is ORSAM Advisor and a faculty member in Department of History at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSFAU) delivered a speech entitled “Turkish-Russian Relations and Kurds”. Following the speech of Ajdar Kurton, editor-in-chief at “Problemı Natsionalnoy Strategii”, entitled “Creation and Characteristics of Separatism” in Contemporary Russia, Assist. Prof. Dr. Huseyin Kalaycı who is a faculty member in Department of Sociology at Fatih University gave his speech under the title of “Kurds in the Light of International Examples”             
 
The Moderator of the second session in the workshop was RISI deputy Director Igor Prokofyev. As the first lecturer of the second session of the workshop, Evgeniy Bahrevskiy who is a researcher in the Department of Caucasian Studies at RISI touched on the “Kurdish Factor in Trans-Caucasian States”. Oytun Orhan, ORSAM Researcher on Middle East, delivered his speech under the title of “Kurds in the Syrian Equation and Turkey's Outlook of Syrian Kurds”, as the second lecturer of the second session. On the other hand, ORSAM Middle East Advisor Arif Keskin gave a speech regarding the Role of Iranian Kurds in Kurdish Movement in the Middle East. And Dr. Vladimir Ivanenko, a researcher at Department of Studies on Asia and Middle East at RISI, presented his speech entitled “Kurds in Iran: An Outlook on the Issue in terms of Domestic and Foreign Policy”. After Bilgay Duman, ORSAM Researcher on Middle East, delivered a speech on Development of Kurdish Movement in Iraq and the Impact on the Region, Dr. Irina Svistunova who is a researcher in Department of Studies on Asia and Middle East at RISI presented her speech on the “Kurdish Factor in Russia's Policy on Middle East.” The last presentation of the workshop was delivered by Dr. Seyfi Kılıç, ORSAM Researcher at Water Research Programme, under the title of “Constitutional Problems Regarding the Management of Water Resources Between Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government and Central Government of Iraq.”               
 
In the last session for a general assessment, attendants had the opportunity to exchange more detailed information with one another.
