Prospects for Syria Round Table Discussion

1 minute reading time

ORSAM in partnership with The Istanbul Policy Center-Sabancı University-Stiftung Mercator Initiative and TOBB ETU organized a round table discussion on “Prospects for Syria” on June 13, 2017 at TOBB –ETU Conference Center.

The round table discussion was convened by YezidSayigh, Senior Fellow at Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. In his speech, he mainly evaluated the current situation in Syria by specifically elaborating the fights in Deirez-zor and Raqqa. Based on his examination on the current state of affairs both in the field and in the process of international attempts for political dialogue, he expressed that a solution in Syria would be a de-facto solution rather than a planned agreement because both the opposition and the regime in Damascus are not sincere in their attempts for political negotiations. Finally, he also drew attention to the post-conflict period and emphasized the difficulty of the de-militarization of armed groups at both sides in Syria.

FollowingSayigh’s speech, the roundtable discussion proceeded with a fruitful evaluation of the Syrian crisis from different aspects thanks to the contributions and questions of distinguished guests.
