Reflections from Middle Eastern Turkmen Symposium

On 6-7 May 2014, ORSAM, in cooperation with Türkmeneli Cooperation and Cultural Foundation, Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) and Turkish Historical Society organized a symposium entitled “Middle Eastern Turkmen”. The symposium can be considered a first in Turkey. At the Symposium many domestic and foreign speakers gave enlightening information and discussed many topics about Iraqi, Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian Turkmen. In the Symposium, there were academics and experts from Turkey as well as a total of ten Turkmen speakers from abroad, namely four from Iraq, three from Syria, two from Lebanon and one from Palestine. They made presentations and shared their observations from the field with Turkish public at the Middle Eastern Turkmen Symposium.
 
The Middle Eastern Turkmen Symposium has been remarkable given the level of participation from the region, as well as in terms of the interest of public officials. President Abdullah Gül and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu sent messages to the Symposium. In addition, opening speech of the Deputy Prime Minister Emrullah İşler was read to the participants. This case has been indicators of Turkey's highest level of sensitivity and support to the Middle Eastern Turkmen. At the Symposium, the message given by public officials had a common emphasis that Turkey’s support on Turkmen would always continue to be expressed. This has been an expression of Turkey’s strong stance on the subject of Turkmen.
 
History of the Turkmen living in the Middle East and their settlement process in the Middle East were discussed at the Symposium. In addition, geographical distribution, population status, social and cultural structures of Turkmens living in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine were examined. Political dynamics of the countries where Turkmen live were elaborated and Turkmens’ place in these dynamics were also discussed.  Both legal and political rights and freedoms of the Turkmen in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine were examined, as well as the recent political situation of the Turkmens. At the Symposium, Turkmens expressed their expectations from Turkey. Moreover, academics and experts from Turkey sought to explain Turkey’s perspective on Turkmen living in the Middle East and attempted to address the place of Turkmen place the Turkish foreign policy.
 
With the symposium, introduction of Turkmen living in the Middle East to the public in Turkey was achieved and Turkish media’s attention was also drawn. Besides, the Symposium provided communication and interaction of Turkmens living in the Middle East with Turkey and it contributed to the further development of this situation.  In addition, the Middle Eastern Turkmen Symposium will be the primary reference for the future studies on this issue. The presentations have shed light on the research on this subject, as this symposium revealed many new information related to the presence of Turkmen in the Middle East.
 
In addition to these, the Symposium provided a platform to create and improve communication and interaction among Turkmen living in the Middle East countries. Therefore, it served as a forum to share experience, information and knowledge among Turkmen.
 
Speakers from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine found a chance to express their problems. Turkmens’ sensitivity and perspectives to events in the region has been discussed. In addition, Turkmen also have brought up their expectations Turkey to the agenda. Thus, it will contribute toward Turkey’s steps to address Turkmen’s expectations.
 
The Middle Eastern Turkmen Symposium has been qualified to be a first in Turkey because of the issues it tackles, the scope of participants as well as its results. With this Symposium, the necessity of increasing number of studies about Middle Eastern Turkmen has been understood more clearly.
