The Role of the Regional Powers in the Future of Yemen

The war in Yemen, which has continued since 2014, reflects one of the most important struggles in the Middle East alongside Syria and Libya. In 2015, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) intervened in Yemen with the Operation Decisive Storm, which further intensified the conflict. As of 2019, the intervention of the Arab Coalition forces in Yemen seems to be failed. In Yemen, where regional actors such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iran as well as international actors such as the US, Russia and the UN are influential, the nature of the conflicts has changed recently. The cracks in the Saudi Arabia-UAE alliance that emanated from the UAE military drawdown have rendered the local forces to be more visible. In addition to the current situation in Yemen, the UAE agenda and the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran should be carefully examined.

Within this context, “The Role of the Regional Powers in the Future of Yemen” panel, in partnership with Center for Middle Eastern Studies ORSAM and Yeni Yemen Medya Merkezi, bring together regional experts and academics studying the region in order to understand the new situation in Yemen.
