The Way Forward: Algeria After Bouteflika

Although Algeria keeps a low profile in the international media, the developments in the county have important repercussions in local and regional scale. Because, Algeria has abundant natural resources such as uranium, gold, oil and natural gas and, there is strong resistance against its democratization and independence while being closely monitored by foreign lobbies and investors.

The democratization of Algeria is very likely to affect the region. Algeria has warm relations with Turkey and its Ottoman heritage. Its delicate approach to Palestine is also important for the peace and stability in North Africa and the Western Mediterranean. Algeria’s transition to an actual and functioning democracy would contribute to enhancing its role as a political actor in the region and be instrumental to resolve its differences with Morocco.

Lately, Bouteflika’s candidacy for a fifth term led to widespread protest across Algeria and forced him to resign. In order to understand and evaluate this dynamic and crucial interim, a panel will be held in ORSAM hosting Algerian experts. We cordially invite you all to our panel!
