Global Powers and the Middle East

Throughout history, the Middle East has been a key hub for international trade, cultural exchange, and political influence, owing to its strategic geographical location. The region’s long-standing, complex, and deeply intertwined historical dynamics have enabled it to play a significant role in shaping global developments and pivotal events throughout human history.

Today, the Middle East remains a focal point for global powers due to its energy resources, geopolitical significance, religious and ideological structures, crisis potential, and military-strategic value. Its importance stems not only from its material assets but also from the far-reaching global political and economic implications of developments in the region.

The rise of multipolarity in the global system—particularly since the early 21st century—has intensified the rivalry between major global powers and emerging regional actors. This competition complicates efforts to resolve conflicts in the Middle East, as global powers often exploit regional disputes to drain their rivals’ resources, challenge their commitments, and weaken their influence. As a result, many conflicts in the region remain unresolved or frozen.

In this context, the ORSAM Global Powers Coordination Office seeks to understand and interpret the role of global powers in the Middle East, analyzing their strategic objectives and their influence on the region’s evolving geopolitical landscape.
